Project summary:
Due to current environmental and climatic issues, discovering, producing and managing new resources like underground water are major challenges. Our project aims at developing new tools for prospecting, monitoring and management of water and fluid contents at regional scale. The design and application of powerful imaging tools will be done at different spatial and temporal scales (basins and near-surface) with multiple data, e.g., seismic, electrical and gravimetric data. This project involves together geophysicists of the Geosciences Environment Toulouse Laboratory (GET) and computer scientists and applied mathematicians of the Laboratory of Analysis and Systems Architecture (LAAS-CNRS). In order to estimate water contents at sedimentary and near-surface scales, we propose to improve, optimize and use imaging tools to invert simultaneously various data at different scales. This is a major challenge. The project falls within two priority research topics of the GET laboratory : 1)Geo-resources, Geophysics and Geodesy, and 2) the priority axis of the University Paul Sabatier in Earth Sciences and High Performance Computing as well as Axis 1 of the Regional Competitiveness Pole AQUAVALLEY: Identification and assessment of water resources (identification and characterization of surface and deep water resources - quality and quantity of the resource - anticipation of the evolution of the resource).

Given the large volume of data to be processed, the optimization of parallel code on the regional platform CALMIP or some local platforms like NUWA at OMP will make it possible to accurately estimate water contents. The calculations will be carried out with data collected at the controlled laboratory scale and in two pilot sites, i.e., the Saint-Lary Soulan basin (kilometric scale data) and a medium scale site on the Mediterranean coast using seismic data and the BGI gravimetric database. The applications to the natural environment will be conducted under the supervision of experts in data acquisition and processing. In the medium term, we will be able to carry out systematic studies in the Pyrenees and monitor the transfer of water content masses at local and regional scales.

Goals of the Ph.D. work:
The Ph.D. student will focus his efforts on:
1) The improvement, adaptation and optimization of numerical simulation (forward problem using high order numerical schemes) and High Performance Computing (HPC) data inversion codes for the modeling and coupling of different physics during inversions .
2) The application and validation of digital acoustic data inversion codes in a controlled laboratory environment at a frequency range of a few kHz.
3) Taking into account of petrophysical and geological data a priori during the inversion process at the scales of the subsurface and basins.

Required profile: Master's degree in Earth and Planetary Science, applied mathematics or civil engineering, preferably with an engineering degree( INSA, INP, ENSICA, ISAE, .. .engineering schools)
Scientific curiosity, a taste for geophysical exploration, numerical simulation and parallel computing; faculties of teamwork. Strong background in finite elements, fiinite differences anf finite volumes.

Skills: good to excellent level in Fortran90/2008 and/or C / C ++ code development on Linux; knowledge of MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, OpenACC or OpenCL; numerical simulation, parallel algorithms; experience appreciated in computing accelerators: GPU, Intel Xeon Phi or cluster computing.

Professional perspectives of the PhD student: know-how in the fields of numerical computation and high-performance computing (HPC); expertise in geophysics and civil engineering for private companies as well as the academic career at regional or international level.

Elle développe et administre la plateforme data.gouv.fr, est responsable de la diffusion des données de référence, développe des infrastructures de données (base adresse nationale, API entreprise, etc).
Elle accompagne les administrations dans la mise en œuvre de stratégies fondées sur la donnée et dans leur stratégie d'ouverture et de collaboration avec la société civile.
La mission Etalab fait partie de la Direction interministérielle du numérique et du système d'information et de communication de l'État (DINSIC).

Descriptif du poste
Placé.e au sein de l'équipe data sciences de la mission Etalab, le ou la candidat.e sera chargé.e de développer et mettre en œuvre des méthodes de traitement du langage naturel (NLP).
A titre d'exemple, il.elle pourra être amené.e à travailler sur le développement de méthodes de pseudonymisation des décisions de jurisprudence, afin notamment de pouvoir les diffuser en open data conformément à la Loi pour une République numérique.
De façon générale, il.elle sera amené.e à travailler sur les questions d'occultations d'informations couvertes par des secrets.
Il.elle pourra également travailler sur l'extraction d'informations structurées à partir d'éléments textuels ex. décisions de justice.
L'objectif est de renforcer la compétence de la mission Etalab sur le sujet et de développer des outils libres et documentés pouvant être utilisés par les différentes administrations pour une large diffusion de données en open data.

Description du profil recherché
Le ou la candidat.e doit être titulaire d'un doctorat ou d'un diplôme de niveau master en statistiques ou en data sciences ou avoir une expérience spécifique dans ce domaine.
Il.elle doit avoir de solides connaissances en machine learning et une expérience en traitement du langage naturel (NLP) et reconnaissance d'entités nommées (NER).

Contexte :
Les céramiques sont des matériaux de référence pour la conception de solutions de blindage à haut niveau de protection. Les travaux récents ont permis d’améliorer la compréhension des liens unissant la microstructure à la fragmentation des matériaux céramiques (thèse de J.L. Zinszner, soutenue en 2014). Néanmoins, le comportement en compression dynamique et la résistance du milieu fragmenté à la progression du projectile restent décrits par des approches purement phénoménologiques. En effet, les modèles actuels décrivent mal la réponse des céramiques endommagées, ce qui tend à limiter leurs capacités prédictives.
Des travaux de modélisation et de simulation utilisant une formulation Galerkin discontinu sont menés au LSPM depuis plusieurs années pour étudier le comportement dynamique de matériaux fragiles contenant des microfissures (thèse de Q. Gomez, soutenue en 2017).
Objectif de la thèse :
L’objectif de la thèse consiste à améliorer la connaissance des mécanismes pilotant le comportement en compression de milieux microfissurés. Dans ce but, des simulations numériques seront conduites en considérant explicitement une ou plusieurs populations de microfissures. Ces simulations en champ complet permettront de mieux appréhender l’influence des paramètres microstructuraux sur la réponse de céramiques en compression dynamique.
Les conclusions tirées de l’analyse en champ complet permettront de proposer et de calibrer un modèle micromécanique homogénéisant les principaux mécanismes activés en compression dynamique.
Déroulement de la thèse :
Le projet de thèse comprendra plusieurs étapes mêlant modélisation, simulations numériques et expérimentations :
1. Il s’agira tout d’abord de mener une analyse critique des travaux de la littérature étudiant expérimentalement, par la modélisation ou par la simulation le comportement sous choc de milieux multi-fissurés,
2. Modélisation et simulation par une formulation Galerkin discontinu de milieux élastiques contenant des populations de microfissures, ces simulations permettront d’identifier l’influence de paramètres microstructuraux sur la réponse dynamique d’une céramique,
3. En s’appuyant sur les résultats précédents, il s’agira de développer et de valider un modèle micromécanique pour le comportement des céramiques microfissurées sous choc,
4. En parallèle, une ou plusieurs configurations expérimentales originales seront dimensionnées pour étudier la réponse sous choc de matériaux céramiques à différents niveaux de microfissuration.

Whether the driver is real or virtual (autonomous vehicle), the robotic management of emergencies is a problematic with multiple stakes. Among the various questions posed by the elaboration and execution of these emergency maneuvers, we can consider:
• Is the driver reasonably able to handle the situation alone?
• If a robotic action is envisaged, are the risk levels and their associated seriousness acceptable to the stakeholders (drivers, passengers, other actors of the scene, constructor, legislator...)?
In this context, the international organization EuroNCAP provides homologation scenarios requiring high performance driver assistance systems, while being adapted to the technical limitations of current perception systems and actuators. To date, active safety protocols have been evaluating AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) separately. This maneuver restriction is adapted to a frontal perception of the obstacles / lines resulting from a radar / camera data fusion. By projecting in the near future, a more robust 360° perception of the scene (objects and infrastructure) opens the door to more complex, more dynamic and more secure maneuvers thanks to the simultaneous control of 2 or 3 actuators (steering, accelerator, brake) (AES: Automatic Emergency Steering).

--Objectives--
The thesis, proposed in the framework of CIFRE PhD project in partnership between RENAULT and CHROMA Team (INRIA-Grenoble), aims to develop these onboard optimization algorithms for emergency trajectory using steering and braking (normal or differential) systems. In response to the two questions mentioned above, optimal trajectories minimizing the criticality of the risks will be calculated by optimizing a complex cost function under constraints (environment, vehicle dynamics and actuator saturation).
The provided input data are: a dynamic probabilistic occupancy grid of the space and infrastructure data, the vehicle constraints (actuator saturation, handling limitations…).
The expected outputs are: a steering wheel angle and a braking torque references. To do this, two optimization problems must be solved under constraints:
• Path planning: a tactical level trajectory (typically 3sec horizon) will be calculated for later use by the longitudinal and lateral controllers.
• Path following: steering angle and braking torque references will be optimized to achieve the trajectory from the previous step.
The integration of path planning and following problems in a single optimization problem is possible to obtain the best solutions.*

Le département Etudes générales, Développement et Territoires (EDT) contribue à la croissance du Groupe

Au sein du département, l’unité Etudes, Stratégies et Modélisation (ESM) réalise des études de planification et

Ambition du projet :

Dans un souci d’amélioration continue de compréhension des problématiques de mobilité, l’unité ESM
souhaiterait améliorer sa capacité à estimer les flux au niveau des bus en Ile-de-France. Sa modélisation est en
effet délicate dans le contexte francilien et particulièrement dans la zone agglomérée de par le rôle secondaire
du réseau bus par rapport aux modes lourds, les volumes de déplacements concernés et la difficulté de
modéliser des flux à une échelle aussi fine au regard des données d’observation des comportements de mobilité
disponibles. Le projet vise à faire avancer nos méthodes de modélisation des flux sur un groupe de lignes de bus
à la journée et à l’année, identifier des axes de développement d’un outil permettant ce type de modélisation
et initier le travail de développement.
Pour participer à ce projet, au sein du département EDT, le pôle Mobilité de l’unité Etudes, Stratégies et

The ROMSOC EID Network brings together 15 international academic institutions and 11 industry partners and supports the recruitment of eleven Early Stage Researchers (ESRs). The research is focused on three major topics: coupling methods, model reduction methods, and optimization methods, for industrial applications in well selected areas, such as optical and electronic systems, economic processes, and materials. DESCRIPTION OF JOB POSITION: 1 full-time contract for 36 months as PhD position for the ROMSOC project, ESR-08. The PhD degree will be awarded by University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

WORKING TITLE: Efficient Computational strategies for complex coupled flow, thermal and structural phenomena in parametrized settings.

WORKING OBJECTIVES: Present and future efforts in simulation-based sciences are dedicated to hierarchies of complex multi-physics problems, as well as parameterized systems characterized by multiple spatial and temporal scales. New ROM methodologies are required for coupled and parameterized problems in industrial and medical sciences. This concerns in particular fluid-structure interactions and thermo-fluid-dynamics and the use of these reduced models for Fluid-thermal phenomena.
Objectives:

The numerical simulation of the evolution of the fluid will be carried out using a turbulence and multi-phase model. A transport passive scalar phenomenon will also be modelled in the problem.
Modelling and simulation of 3D thermal-fluid-structure phenomena.
Numerical simulation will be performed on free or commercial software packages of proven quality.
Reduced order modelling (computational, geometrical and parametric) for hierarchies of coupled multi-physics problems.
Construction of test cases and carrying out numerical experiments.

Expected Results:

New model reduction methods for coupled systems of fluid-structure interactions and thermo-fluid-dynamics.
Error estimators for such coupled systems.

You are a Master 2 student majoring in mathematics, applied mathematics, or computer science.
You have outstanding skills at finite element modeling (FEM), and have implemented or at
least used such models yourself in the past. You also have good C, C++ programming skills;
optionally, you have good Linux sysadmin skills.

Internship subject

Using the FreeFEM++ tool, you will create a 2D axisymmetric model of a hydraulic coupling.
This model will include two metal parts corresponding to the hydraulic connectors, as well as
a toroidal elastomeric o-ring seal in-between them, and the fluid itself. The three solid parts will
be in solid contact with friction, and subject to linear elastic deformation. When the fluid
pressure will be high enough, the fluid will separate the seal from one of the metal parts and
infiltrate the gap, until it flows to the outside of the coupling.
Attaining the deepest level of understanding of this phenomenon, as well as of its correct
modeling by finite elements, will be the main task of the internship. Despite its apparent
simplicity, this is a difficult problem, and exploring it will help you gain solid fundamental and
practical knowledge of the field of finite element modeling.

Context

You will be part of the Airthium Modeling team. You will work under direct supervision of the
head of numerical modeling, with regular contact with the CTO/CSO, and you may interact
with professors from the Jacques Louis Lions Laboratory (LJLL) of the UPMC University. Our
offices are located at the Ecole Polytechnique in Palaiseau (RER B Station Massy Palaiseau).
Airthium is a startup making novel electricity storage modules based on heat at an extremely
low cost. Those modules will store the excess solar and wind energy produced in unreliable
grids (islands, developing countries) or where conventional generation cannot compensate a
large share of renewables in the energy mix. It will then deliver the energy when it is needed.

We are seeking to appoint a Professor of Applied Mathematics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. This department is responsible for teaching at all levels across the University and also has a thriving research programme. In November 2015 the department was granted an Athena SWAN Bronze award, reflecting its commitment to addressing gender equality.

Applications are invited from leading researchers in any of the following subfields of Applied Mathematics: mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, mathematical geophysics, complex networks, numerical analysis, mathematical biology, game theory, probability theory and systems theory.

A commitment to collaborative research with departments and research centres across the University of Limerick is desirable. The Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) is a research centre based in the department which applies mathematics to diverse real-world problems. Recent examples of MACSI projects include the modelling of moisture absorption on a silicon chip, information diffusion on Twitter-like networks, and valve wear in an alumina refinery. MACSI also works closely with research centres within UL, such as the new smart manufacturing SFI funded centre Confirm, the Dairy Processing Technology Centre (DPTC), the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Technology Centre (PMTC) and the Synthesis and Solid State Pharmaceutical Centre (SSPC). Eligibility criteria

The candidate recruited in the ROMSOC project must be in the first four years from the date when the candidate obtained the degree entitling him or her to embark on a doctorate (e.g. master degree). No doctoral degree has been awarded during these four years. The candidate must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host institution for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account. A blast furnace is a large furnace for smelting ores with the aim of producing industrial metals which can reach up to 1500°
C. In the blast furnace process knowing the thermo-mechanical behaviou of the furnace crucible or the thermo-hydro-mechanical of the fluid-channel ensemble can enormously improve process fficiency. The parameterization of developed models with respect to the geometry design of several blast furnaces and their material types is essential in order to
quickly transfer the results to the design of new blast furnaces. The project focuses on mathematical modeling of some thermo-hydro-mechanical phenomena arising in the blast furnace during the casting process. When fine associated nonlinear coupled models are available, reduced order models will be needed for their simulation in a short computation time. These models have to be constructed with efficient methods that preserve the coupling and the parameter structure.

The PhD candidate shall develop coupled multi-physics models arising of the casting processes of blast furnaces. The work comprises their parametrization with respect to geometrical design and the development order reduction methods to improve the computation time. The PhD candidate will spend secondments for technical and scientific training at ArcelorMittal (Spain) and at the Consorcio Instituto Tecnolóxico de Matemática Industrial (ITMATI).

Optimal Shape Design of Air Ducts in Combustion Engines.

For performance optimization of combustion engines, in particular in the automobile industry, the optimal shape design of several components of the enigine, such as airducts, is crucial. In this context, for computer based rapid prototyping constrained free form shape optimization techniques are typically superior to parameterization based techniques due to their geometric flexibility. The associated numerical solution requires an efficient computation and yet accu- rate approximation of an adjoint-based shape gradient and also elements of higher order in a shape-gradient-related descent method for high Reynolds number flows. Moreover, geometric constraints need to be taken care of.

The PhD candidate shall develop a software tool for the numerical solution of this constrained shape optimization task. The work includes the implementation and analysis of a finite volume or finite element based optimization tool which involves a flow model, that is equipped with a proper turbulence model, and an associated adjoint scheme. The newly developed solver has to be tested for industry relevant use cases in a parallel computing environment. The PhD candi- date will spend secondments for technical and scientific training at Math.Tec (Austria). The PhD degree will be awarded by Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany.

Eligibility: The candidate recruited in the ROMSOC project must be in the first four years from the date when the candidate obtained the degree entitling him or her to embark on a doctorate (e.g. master degree). Numerical simulations play an important role in these reflections for the development of "smart cities". Indeed, the multimodal nature of transportation modes make the evaluation of the impact of a new infrastructure rather complicated.
However, this evaluation is the keypoint for multiple applications, be there about economics (optimise transit times between production or work areas), ecology (limiting C02 emissions) or security (secure a quick access for security squads on the events).
Developing adapted numerical models allows for a better understanding of the main mechanisms of urban mobility.
In particular, traffic on roads my be described using physical models such as those used in fluid mechanics and based on conservation laws. First proposed by Lightill and Witham in 1955, and Richards in 1956, this model accounts for the most recurrent types of behaviors in road traffic. It is a model of compressible fluid mechanics in which shocks and vacuum states account for traffic jams formations and disappearances. We will focus in this work on this kind of models in order to describe the urban traffic after a critical event (such as a fire or an explosion).
A first bibliographical work has already been done at ONERA and adapted traffic models from the literature have been identified. A generic numerical model has also been implemented on test-cases accounting for the main characteristics of a road network : variations of road capacities and existence of cross-roads.
The proposed internship will pursue this work and will begin with a numerical validation of the model using a realistic traffic context defined from measurements given by Campus Trafic (Toulouse Metropole).
Then, we will focus on the possibility to use aircraft-based imagery in order to initialize and correct the numerical simulations. The last part of the internship will then be devoted to the coupling between the urban traffic and crowd models.

TYPE OF PROJECT: The ROMSOC project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie-Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 765374.



OBJECTIVES OF PROJECT: ROMSOC is a European Industrial Doctorate (EID) project in the programme Innovative Training Networks (ITN) and part of Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions within the Horizon 2020 programme.

The ROMSOC EID Network brings together 15 international academic institutions and 11 industry partners and supports the recruitment of eleven Early Stage Researchers (ESRs). Each ESR will be working on an individual research project in the host institution with secondments related to their research in other academic and industrial partners of the network. The research is focused on three major topics: coupling methods, model reduction methods, and optimization methods, for industrial applications in well selected areas, such as optical and electronic systems, economic processes, and materials. The ROMSOC EID Network offers a unique research environment, where leading academics and innovative industries will integrate ESRs into their research teams for the training period, providing an excellent structured training programme in modelling, simulation and optimization of whole products and processes.

CALL: Open Early Stage Researcher/PhD Position at Consorcio Instituto Tecnolóxico de Matemática Industrial (ITMATI), Santiago de Compostela, Spain.



DESCRIPTION OF JOB POSITION: 1 full-time contract for 36 months as PhD position for the ROMSOC project, ESR-02. The PhD degree will be awarded by University of A Coruña, Spain.



WORKING TITLE: Mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of coupled thermo-acoustic multi-layer systems for enabling particle velocity measurements in the presence of airflow.



WORKING OBJECTIVES: Microflown USP probes, which are able to measure particle velocity and acoustic pressure fields simultaneously, are sensitive to the effect of wind, since they are based on thermal transducers and hence highly dependent on the variations of thermal flow velocity. Mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of thermo-acoustic coupled systems (involving USP probes, the compressible fluid in the presence of flow, and the multilayer windscreen) will play a key role in the design of novel windscreens to mitigate the flow effects on the measures of acoustic probes.



The PhD candidate shall develop mathematical models and numerical simulation of different strategies to design effective windscreens, efficient numerical strategies to solve coupled problems involving wave propagation phenomena, and validate the developed simulation environment performing a thorough experimental investigation.



PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR: Dr. Andrés Prieto (Primary Supervisor), Professor of Applied Mathematics of the University of A Coruña and affiliated researcher of ITMATI.



CANDIDATES PROFILE: Master degree (or equivalent) in Industrial Mathematics, Mathematical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computational Acoustics, Scientific Computing or other related disciplines. We seek excellent open-minded and team-spirited PhD candidates who will get unique international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral training in scientific and transferable skills by distinguished leaders from academia and industry.



REQUIREMENTS:



* Experience in numerical solution of differential equations, and acoustics.

* Programming skills in object oriented languages as well as Python.

* Strong interest in interdisciplinary scientific work.

* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

* Strong motivation to pursue a PhD degree.

* Preferred qualifications include excellent grades, research talent (as proven by the master thesis), affinity with mathematical modelling and simulation in engineering applications, and personal ambition.

* Excellent command of English, together with good academic writing and presentation skills.
